The history of this place dates back to the time of the Spanish colonization of South America. In the 16th century, the Spanish arrived in the Iguazu Falls region and began to establish religious missions in the area.
In 1750, the Treaty of Madrid established the border between Spain and Portugal, which at the time controlled much of what is now Brazil. With Brazil's independence in 1822, the border between Brazil and Argentina became a matter of dispute.
In 1865, during the War of the Triple Alliance, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay joined forces to fight against Paraguay. After the war, the Treaty of the Triple Alliance was signed, which established the border between the three countries at the Iguazu River.
The milestone of the three borders was built in 1903 to mark the point where the borders of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay meet.
